Reluctant Patient

A very active 74-year-old patient came in for Occupational Therapy with partial rotator cuff tear from unknown origin, with a look on her face that said, “OK, I am here because my doctor ordered this but, I think this will be a waste of my time.”  After her evaluation, initial treatment and tips for performing her ADLs without having shoulder pain, the patient stated, “Well, at least I get a massage.”, when agreeing to make future appointments.   After each appointment, the patient would reluctantly agree that her shoulder was feeling better.  After 4 weeks, the patient had full movement and return of her strength and was discharged with her home exercise program.  She smiled coyly and said, “I didn’t believe that therapy could do anything for my shoulder but, now that it’s all better, I have changed my mind.”
